2018 Audi A5 2.0T Coupe Automatic | audi cars. The if-it-ain't-broke coming to fixing thoughts apparently restates well into German because you have to askance your eyes to see how Audi has altered the A5 with this new-for -2018 redesign. Wheelbase and overall segment are a touch longer, while height is the same and width is down by a merely 0.3 inch. The grille, headlamps, and taillamps all have broader amounts, and those zeppelin-like pleats in the punk are apparently how Audi's metal benders deserve their remuneration. The clamshell punk is a lovely touch, and we're too fond of the insidious upward and outward extent of the rear fender pleats. If your lifestyle emptiness for low-key elegance, this A5 delivers.
Going Deeper
The excellent stuff is inside. While the turbocharged, intercooled, and direct-injected 2.0 -liter inline-four carries over its iron stymie and longitudinal direction, there are worthwhile advantages in both dominance( up from 220 to 252 horsepower) and torque( which increases from 258 to 273 lb-ft ). As before, Quattro all-wheel drive is standard, and purchasers may choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch automated with three controlling procedures and paddle shifters. Audi claims the new multilink front exclusion improves steering precision and that force has been methodically pruned throughout the car. Putting one gear from the manual transmission, choosing new aluminum front-suspension constituents, and other measures provided a 65 -pound weight savings over a similarly equipped 2016 Audi A5 we measured.
This 2018 volume has Quattro all-wheel drive, a huge sunroof, three-zone automated climate control, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as standard material. Interestingly, Audi charges the same $43,775 base expenditure for both manual and automated forms. Our two-pedal exam auto was a Premium Plus model, which is a $3000 step up from the base Premium( lending heated 10 -way movable front seats, LED headlights, heated exterior reflects, moon radio, audio-visual parking assists, and other material ). It was outfitted with a $2600 piloting box( which takes into consideration Audi's Virtual Cockpit electronic device knot ), a $1250 S line Sport package( front sport sets with four-way lumbar revisions, sport exclusion, and a few decor components ), a $950 Bang& Olufsen audio system, an $800 19 -inch wheel and low-profile summer-tire box, and Florett Silver Metallic paint costing an extra $575. The full $52,950 tab is less than you'd deplete for a Ford Mustang Shelby GT3 50.

The indulgent option load didn't impeded the new A5 at the test trail. Its combining of lighter force, more dominance, and greater torque multiplication in the first 3 paraphernaliums clipped more than a second from both the 6.1 -second zero-to -60 -mph acceleration and the 14.7 -second quarter-mile elapsed meter we evaluated for the aforementioned 2016 A5. In knowledge, this A5' s 5.0 -second-flat haste to 60 outstrips every 2.0 -liter-turbo direct opponent we've clocked--a BMW 428 i, a Cadillac ATS 2.0 T, a Mercedes-Benz C3 00, and a Lexus RC2 00 t--plus a few remarkable six-cylinder rivals--a BMW 435 i, a Cadillac ATS 3.6, a 3.6 -liter Chevy Camaro, and a Ford Mustang packing 3.7 liters. Chalk it up not so much better to the A5' s 252 horsepower but to the dual-clutch automatic's speedy handoffs during upshifts and the Quattro driveline that lavishes not one iota of energy on wheelspin.( The scheduled contestants everyone is rear-drive, and three were equipped with manual transmissions .)
Proving it's no one-trick pony, the new A5 exceeded in other trail measures. The Continental ContiSportContact 5P radials hung tight on the skidpad to the adjust of 0.93 g, exceeding the field by 0.01 to 0.05 g. Fade-free stopping from 70 mph in 152 hoofs bested BMW's 428 i by 12 hoofs and the Lexus RC by 19. Its 76 -decibel interference stage during flat-out acceleration is quieter than Cadillac's ATS coupe by three to seven decibels.
Real-World Ability
What's more impressive is how the A5 merges its dynamic knowledge with a thoughtfully configured hovel to deliver superb back-road strafing clevernes. You're well restrained by a laterally firm sit, accurately reinforced from shoulder to knee, and hanging onto a perfectly contoured and leather-clad three-spoke wheel. If you're tardy sounding the plastic upshift paddle, the transmitting delivers a snappy upshift at the 6750 -rpm redline. The brake pedal goes to work at the top of its waver and is gauged to deliver predictable stopping make for each incremental increased number of influence. Body wheel is tightly held, yet the motors never travel stiff-legged over bumps and swells.
When you horde the adhesion restraint, the front tires let you know what's up with a soft grumble. Dial in more steering lock and the backs originate wandering vast half a gradation after the breasts. Quick, well-weighted steering offering inklings of what's going on at the pavement cures nail your desired route. But the S line Sport package and the 19 -inch motors with summertime tires--options totaling $2050 -- are critical if you're serious about employing all of this coupe's agility.
That investment too empowers the A5' s street-stealth state. You can bombard around town expeditiously because the engine is gentle at work, the tires never howl, and figure wheel is so tightly contained. While some athletics coupes are a spectacle even at modest velocities, this silver-tongued missile vectors through traffic like an unmarked patrol car.
Thanks to its yawning trunk cavity and split-folding rear seatbacks, the A5 is a fine weekend fighter; cargo up to six hoofs in segment lies flat. And although its roofline shows otherwise, this coupe will accommodate four adults on time nighttime. High-mounted switchings on the front bucket sets exhaust the backrests and dominance the front seats to their forward stops. Squeezing through the entry fissure is in need of yogi's flexibility, but the griping abruptly subsides when rear fares detect all the heading -, leg -, and elbow room at their jettison. The foot cushions are contoured for solace and invoked high enough that knees aren't jammed into kuki-chins. Claustrophobia isn't a concern due to the svelte pillars and vast fields of line-up glass. Regrettably, the gap between front and rear center consoles is so tighten that if a rear inhabitant wishes to change sides, they're better off exiting the A5 and reiterating the entry rigmarole via the opposite door.

While panel breaches and overall interior character were flawless in our exam auto, to its implementation of designing, this A5 is more a placeholder than a great stride send rivaling those Audi has achieved in the past. Some staff member experienced the matte-black leather and plastic faces accented by strategic bits of polished, knurled, or inscribed metal needed cordiality. To allay the individuals who seem the contempo-tech looking doesn't jibe with the $50,000 -plus expenditure, the A5' s options roster includes three alternative leather colors and walnut or oak paneling in place of the inscribed aluminum.
At least every paddle, substitution, and control knob is reservoir located and works in an intuitive politenes. The 12.3 -inch digital ascertain knot is reconfigurable to accommodate crystal-clear gauges and navigation displays. The 7.0 -inch midst screen that begs to be touched is in fact required quite nicely by a large, console-mounted rotary knob with a couple of switchings on the steering wheel to help with audio adjustments.
It's a shame this A5 isn't more of an extrovert because its class-leading achievement authorizes a serious gape from anyone store fee coupes. At least Audi is fostering the A5 family with convertible and Sportback ( four-door hatchback ) volumes, plus a 450 -hp RS5 due next year to backstop the currently available 354-hp S5. Clearly, those growing up and out of rowdy V-8 coupes have never had it so good.
